Hello and thanks for this opportunity to tell you a bit about
myself. I first arrived in Japan in 1978 and I have been studying the
Japanese language ever since. The ability to speak, read and write
Japanese has grown to be the single most important factor of my
30-year career as I have worked for several Japanese companies as well
as American companies wishing to do business with Japanese companies.
I lived in Japan for a total of 8 years. I was last in Japan on
7Jan2011 for a vacation with my wife who is Japanese.
I have
taught Japanese classes for the Japan-America Society of Houston and
for the Continuing Education Program at the University of Houston
where I graduated with a business degree. In addition, I have taught
Japanese to my peers at several of the companies where I have worked.
Living and working overseas has given me an appreciation for my own
language. I have also taught and tutored in English both in Japan and
the US. While a college student at the University of Houston, I taught
English conversation and reading comprehension to students from all
over the globe. Many children and young adults are now
interested in Japanese manga (comics) and anime (cartoons). I can
assist students wishing to explore those types of entertainment, but
only if approved by parents first. Unfortunately, some of the Japanese
manga and anime is quite lurid and/or violent in nature and shouldn't
be viewed by children so that sort of material will not be allowed in
my classes. Finally, I want to mention that being a tutor is a
wonderful opportunity to help a child develop new talents or skills.
However, I believe tutoring is also a way to support the noble goals
of parents to raise a child who is well-educated and prepared for life
as an adult. Therefore, parents should always feel free to mention
their concerns to me and are, of course, welcome to join the classes
at no extra charge. Private Lessons $29/hr. Discounts for
multiple student/family classes. My email address shinnosuke_stringer@msn.com
& my phone number 210-240-4396.
This one hour physical education class will focus on fitness
development, social interaction, cooperative learning, and sport skill
development. Class curriculum will follow State of Texas standards for
physical education.

Kinderdance is more than just a dance
program. Our developmentally designed programs build
self-confidence and self-esteem in young children. We blend early
childhood academic readiness skills into our curriculum.
Age-appropriate activities are an integral part of our weekly
lesson plans. Kinderdance teaches to the total child, thereby
enhancing the emotional, social, cognitive, physical, and creative
development of each child. Instructors issue periodic progress
reports directly to the parents to inform them of their child's
progress throughout the year. We offer a private, low stress, year-end
demonstration where the children have the opportunity to
demonstrate the skills they have mastered. All programs are taught
by certified Kinderdance instructors who specialize in teaching
developmentally appropriate movement activities to young children.

If anyone is looking for western riding lessons, I highly recommend
Diamond C Stables & Ranch on Toutant Beauregard between Leon Springs
and Boerne. My kids have been taking riding lessons there for the
last three years. We have had a great experience and really enjoy the
clean and kid friendly atmosphere. They have great lesson horses for
every level of rider. The riding instructors are friendly and
professional. They offer lessons any time, but they are looking for
homeschoolers that want to ride during the day. Give them a call at
(830)755-4911 if you're interested. You can also reach them by email
at dcculver@gvtc.com They have
a great website at www.diamondcstables.net. Thanks, Sheila Hawkins

Keynote Speaker:
Lisa Rivero is a parent, author, and a member of the Board of
Directors of Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG). Her
keynote address, Growing with Intensity, will look at the role
intensity plays in giftedness, so that parents can better help their
children with issues such as perfectionism, stress, and feelings of
not fitting in with the rest of the world. Sponsored by
Summer Institute for the Gifted
The 2011 TAGT Parent Conference
is next Saturday at the Hurst Conference Center and we want to see you
there! Each year, hundreds of parents consistently report that this
day-long training provides essential tools in four key areas:
- Social-emotional needs: It's obvious--gifted and talented children are
different; often more sensitive, prone to stress and occasionally
failure because of a tendency toward perfectionism. Learn to help your
children navigate their own unique needs.
- Best practices: Even
gifted children have to "learn to learn" and learn to think
critically. Knowing how their education works and how to participate
can give you and your children a powerful boost toward fulfilling
lifelong learning potential.
- Parenting and academic resources:
School is out, and homework is finished; now what? Learn how you can
enrich home life outside of the classroom curriculum.
- Advocacy:
How schools serve gifted and talented students varies greatly, and is
largely determined at the district level. Learn how you can organize
with other parents locally to ensure your children's needs are being
met.

Summit Christian Academy is a University-Model School® located at
Boerne First Baptist Church. University-Model Schools allow parents
more involvement in their children's education by combining the
traditional private classroom environment with homeschooling. Classes
are attended Tuesday and Thursday with optional electives on
Wednesday. This allows for more family time on alternate days as
parents guide their children through detailed lessons given by the
teacher to complete their student's education. This formula allows for
better character development as quality relationships between parents
and children are fostered.

Shannie Carnline is a 13-year-old homeschool girl who lives in
Encino Park, San Antonio. She has juvenile scleroderma and it
may be systemic. Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease which
causes a thickening of tissues. Juvenile scleroderma and
systemic scleroderma (where internal organ tissues are also
thickening) are more rare. And juvenile systemic scleroderma is
extremely rare. Her dad has a good job with great insurance, but
insurance has not covered all of her treatments thus far. Now
doctors are recommending a last resort treatment in Dallas that will
require Shannie and her mom to relocate to Dallas for three or four
months and insurance is not covering any of it. We need to raise
$12,000 to cover Shannie’s medical treatments and her and her mom’s
temporary relocation to Dallas. Please view the following and
then consider contributing to her medical fund!

Do you want a great score on the SAT? Are you nervous about the math part of the SAT?
Some students are rusty or "mathphobic" and need a quick math
review. Some aren't good at taking tests and need general test
taking strategies. Some may be strong at math tests yet need to
learn the specific tricks and quirks of the SAT. Some need the
accountability to do what they already know they need to do.
I, Dr. Christian Seberino, know how to prepare you for the SAT.
Whether you need a math review, general test taking strategies, the
tricks and quirks of the SAT, or accountability, I can help you
improve your score.
This SAT Math Prep class meets 2/12 - 3/5. Classes meet Saturdays
from 10am-12pm in an online "virtual classroom" to save you time
and money. The cost is $195.
Or, if you prefer to study on your own, you can purchase the
Independent Study Kit for $90 which includes recordings of the SAT
Math Prep class sessions, practice SAT math sections and other
practice problems.

Instructions Below Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a one-day
conference put on by volunteers in the community (primarily women) to
promote young girls’ interest in science and mathematics, encouraging
them to continue taking science and math courses so that these fields
become real alternatives as they are in the process of choosing a
career and a degree program in college. This program was put on here
in San Antonio from 1985 until 2003. Each year, it attracted between
1200 and 1400 girls from all over south Texas, as well as a couple
hundred parents, teachers, and counselors. It was supported by a
number of local businesses, including Southwest Research Institute.
Faculty, staff, and students from St. Mary's University, the
University of Texas at San Antonio, Our Lady of the Lake, and the
School of Pharmacy at the University of the Incarnate Word volunteered
together to run the conference. The program was revived in January
2010, held on the UTSA campus. This initial revival was kept on a
smaller scale than in the past, targeting only 6th - 8th grade girls
in the immediate San Antonio area. Almost 400 girls attended, and
about 75 adults; some coming from as far away as Corpus Christi. 2011
marks the first year that EYH will held on the St. Mary's campus,
under the auspices of St. Mary's School of Science, Engineering and
Technology.
One of the key components of the conference is
the set of hands-on workshops that are led by local women who maintain
a career in a field considered “non-traditional” for women. This
includes not only the technical and scientific fields of engineering
and the natural and physical sciences, but also psychology, law, law
enforcement, emergency rescue, etc. The primary goals of the workshops
are to allow the girls to learn about non-traditional career paths,
see what education is required to enter the field, experience an
activity related to the career field, and meet real women who can
serve as mentors and role models, showing the girls that it is
possible for them to have a career in any field that they wish. The
workshop size is kept small, preferably to about 15 girls, so that
direct interaction among the girls and with the workshop leader(s) is
possible. Learn more about Expanding Your Horizons on the
national website.
Registration for EYH 2011 is open! There is a $5.00
registration fee per girl which must be included with her completed
form. There is NO registration fee for adults and lunch for adults
is NOT included. Each student / adult must fill out a separate
form. STUDENT FORMS RECEIVED WITHOUT PAYMENT WILL NOT RESERVE
STUDENT’S PLACE IN THE CONFERENCE.
Hello to all you home school families. There is an excellent
outdoor learning curriculum for children ages 3 - 7 that is a part
of Project WILD. "Growing Up WILD" is filled with resource
information, activities, songs, art, music, math and much more!
The only way you can get this curriculum is to attend a workshop;
Susan Campbell and I are considering offering one on May 6, 2011 from
9:00am - 12:00 noon at Eisenhower Park.Since we know that most
of you would need to bring your children, this training will
accommodate them - this is a new concept in Project WILD
trainings.Although the curriculum is valuable to classroom
teachers and other groups, most it can be used intact or adapted
to a home school venue. The link below shares Growing Up WILD more
effectively than I can -check it out!
http://www.projectwild.org/growingupwild.htm
At this point,
we are trying to determine if there is enough interest to conduct
this workshop so your response will help us make that decision.
If we decide to have the workshop, you will receive a flyer with
it's description and instructions regarding registration. We
anticipate that there will be a minimal suggested donation per family
to help purchase supplies for the workshop - there are a lot of
snacks involved and other consumable materials. Looking
forward to hearing from you regarding this great learning
opportunity, Peggy
Peggy Spring <Peggy.Spring@sanantonio.gov>
PS This workshop would be open to
everyone so share the word with everyone!
We need adults to volunteer to act as judges for a homeschool
speech tournament that will occur Feb. 17-19 in Boerne, Tx. NO
experience is needed at all! Judges orientation is provided onsite. We
need lots of judges! Judges can be any one - moms, dads etc. Please

National History Day (NHD) is open to students in sixth
grade and above. Students prepare a project on the annual theme which
this year is “Debate & Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences.”
The great thing about NHD is the flexibility in the ways you can
compete. Your submission can be a paper, exhibit, documentary,
website, or performance. Students can enter as individuals or as a
group of up to five students except for the paper category. My
son has been competing in NHD for the last three years and I can tell
you homeschoolers are welcomed.
Visit www.nhd.org for more
information on possible topics and competition rules. You can email me
any questions you have about the competition. If there is enough
interest, I will hold a general information session or if you have a
homeschool group, I will come and discuss the competition. Please
email at

homeschooling family. Instead of talking about different homeschooling
methods, our speakers will give you insight and tools to help your

Our goal is to inspire
stronger relationships, a greater clarity of purpose, a deeper trust
in our choices, and ultimately the ability to enjoy life together
more. Our speakers are Mary Hood of Association of Relaxed

Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's
and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.
INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It
is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length
of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to
accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School
program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE
requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having
fun at the same time.
The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway)
on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or
all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete
at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early
afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please
call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.
