High School Level English Tutor

My name is Jacquelyn Thayer, and I am currently available as a tutor for high school-level English; my specializations are composition and grammar, literature, and SAT prep.

I have a solid background in the subject, as I graduated summa cum laude from Texas Lutheran University in May 2007 with a degree in English Studies (writing specialization) and, from August 2007 through May 2008, taught 10th grade World Literature and Language Arts at ENAACT Family Academy. At present, I volunteer part-time in the San Antonio Public Library's department of Texana and Genealogy, working on a few special archival projects; furthermore, I have recently completed the process of applying to several graduate programs in English in order to begin pursuit of my master's degree this coming fall.

Of additional note is the fact that I was myself homeschooled from third through twelfth grade; given this, I would like to have the opportunity to help other homeschooled students succeed.

My rate is $20 an hour (which includes expenses such as gas, as well as supplemental e-mail instruction). My home phone number is (210) 967-6650, and my cell (210) 633-6327; I can also be contacted at englishgrace@satx.rr.com.

ITBS testing offered

I will administer the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) to 4th - 8th graders again this year. In addition, I am offering the option to include the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) portion.

"The ITBS measures basic skills that range from facts and
conventions through higher-order skills, not just minimum skills. Since The Iowa Tests were conceived nearly sixty years ago, the authors have consistently defined "basic skills" as a wide range of skills including applying information, making inferences, evaluating, explaining, and other higher-order skills. By grade 8, over half of the ITBStest questions measure these higher-order skills."

Here are links for more info on the tests:
ITBS - http://www.riverpub.com/products/itbs/index.html
cogAT - http://www.riverpub.com/products/cogAt/index.html
http://www.riverpub.com/products/cogAt/pdf/cogATshort.pdf

Testing for the ITBS will occur May 4 - 6, 9am - noon, at my home near the intersection of Bandera and Braun Rd. If you wish to include the CogAT portion, we will either extend each day by an hour or complete this portion in the morning hours of May 7 - this will depend on the needs of the students that register for this portion.

Testing fees:
The fee for the ITBS is $50.
The fee for the ITBS and CogAT is $70.
The fee for the CogAT only (without the ITBS) is $40.

Please let me know by March 1 if you would like to have any of your children tested. Also, I am happy to answer any questions or concerns you have about the tests, the testing environment, etc. I have given this test on several occasions and have used it with my own children.

Anne Frank - A History for Today: A Lesson for Tomorrow
Presented by the Barshop Jewish Community Center
In Collaboration with the Holocaust Memorial of San Antonio and the Jewish Federation of San Antonio
Feb. 1-Feb. 27, 2009

More than 65 years ago, a young girl was forced into hiding.  She saw a government try to obliterate her family, her neighborhood, and her people.  Now, for the first time in San Antonio, this exhibit will take you on a journey into the past.  Anne Frank: A History for Today will take you through the pages of her personal diary, interwoven with historical facts and photographs.

Anne Frank: A History for Today juxtaposes photographs of the Frank family with those of historical events of the time and shows how persecuted people such as the Franks were affected by political decisions and by the actions of individuals.

Anne Frank: A History for Today was developed by the Anne Frank House and is sponsored in North America by the Anne Frank Center, USA (New York City).  A wide array of programming will accompany the exhibit during its stay in San Antonio.

A special 90-minute program, including a guided tour of the Anne Frank exhibit, the Holocaust Memorial Museum and a guest presentation, is offered to groups and schools. This program must be reserved in advance. For more information, contact Rachel Rustin at (210) 302-6951.

The Anne Frank committee is looking for volunteers to assist with giving tours and many other facets of the exhibit.
The Barshop JCC is located at 12500 N.W. Military Hwy. @ Wurzbach Pkwy., 78231.  For directions, call the JCC at (210) 302-6820.  Additional information about the exhibit is available here.

On-Going Activities

Folk Dancing

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.

INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior center, but young people are invited for international dancing on Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults $2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual clothes.

Homeschool Swim Team

The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having fun at the same time.

The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway) on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.

Visit http://www.sawave.org/ for more information.
