Legacy: Hands on the Past is celebrating ten years of educating and
entertaining school aged citizens of San Antonio and South Texas. We
provide tours to children grades K-12 at our lab. Legacy is a
unique teaching program for school children, grades K-12 that uses
archaeological and anthropological methods and techniques to promote
and demonstrate cultural preservation through public education and
outreach.
Each thematic unit guides students through a deeper understanding
of "how we know what we know". Some of the areas covered include:
- Tools of our trade and techniques
- Historic San Antonio, Texas and the U.S. Prehistoric Native
Americans
- Ancient Societies Worldwide (custom tours only)
Your tour of the Legacy Program at the Center for Archaeological
Research (CAR) will take 2 1/2 hours and there is a minimum of
20 students per tour. The Legacy Program provides an indoor lab tour
at a cost of $5.00 per person. Legacy also offers a mock
excavation add-on for students at an additional cost of $2.00 per
person. Group size is limited to 40 students. If you have a larger
group we can schedule multiple visits on consecutive days. A picnic
area is available on the UTSA/CAR grounds for lunch.
Custom Tours Custom tours can be designed to fit your
curriculum. Contact us to discuss the topic you would like to have
covered. Custom tours are $7 per student (with an additional $2 add-on
for mock digs). We will do our best to meet your educational needs.

The American Immigration Law Foundation
is proud to sponsor the Annual "Celebrate America" Creative Writing
Contest in an ongoing effort to educate the public about the benefits
of immigration to our society. Open to fifth grade students across the
nation, this contest encourages our youth, families and surrounding
communities to evaluate and appreciate the effects of immigration in
our own lives. This, in turn, allows them to see that America is truly
a nation of immigrants.
The contest is open to any fifth-grader enrolled in either a public
or private school; home-schooled students are included in the private
school category, and are strongly encouraged to enter. Entries are
limited to 500 words on the subject “Why I Am Glad America Is A Nation
Of Immigrants”. All entries must be postmarked by Tuesday, January 20,
2009 and mailed to:

On Tuesday December 2nd at 3pm SA-HERO will be hosting a meeting to
discuss our National History Day and Junior Historians programs at the
Brookhollow Branch Library.
Last year SA-HERO sent 2 teams to state level competition as part
of National History Day. This year we are looking to expand this
program by allowing younger students to take part in a school level
only History Day Competition. We realize that there are many students
who are not interested in competing in the traditional National
History Day program. For these students we are offering the
opportunity to take part in a history day exhibition.
Currently, SA-HERO sponsors a chapter of Junior Historians at the
high school level. We would like to add both an elementary and
middle school chapter to our current program. These young historians
meet an average of once a month, until we get closer to conference, at
which point the students meet more frequently. Last year the
conference was held in Galveston, and fun was had by all. Junior
Historians allows all home-schooled students to bring their families
to conference! This year the conference will be held in the Dallas
area.
Please RSVP to 210-587-2407 or
info@sahero.org to be sure you have a handout.

Looking to buy a telescope for that loved one, or thinking about
getting into amateur astronomy yourself?
The San Antonio Astronomical Association will be holding an
afternoon and evening-long event designed to educate the public
concerning proper telescope selection, technique, and how to get
started in amateur astronomy. Our goal is to help you make a good
decision when buying your first telescope, instead of buying an
inferior department store telescope that will never work properly
from the start.
If you already have a telescope but need assistance in setting it
up and learning how to use it, BRING IT OUT! That is what this event
is for!
Take part in seeing the Jupiter, Venus, the Moon, Star Clusters,
Nebulae and we may even catch a satellite or two passing overhead!
The event is scheduled for December 6th from 4 PM to 10 PM at St.
Mary's Hall, a private school located at 9401 Starcrest, 1 mile north
of Loop 410 in North San Antonio
YOU DO NOT NEED A TELESCOPE IN ORDER TO ATTEND! JUST AN INTEREST
IN HAVING SOME FUN & A DESIRE TO LEARN!
Back by popular demand, this workshop includes a survey of world
religions represented in the Museum’s collection. Enjoy a math
tessellation workshop inspired by Islamic tiles and a chance to try
your hand at a sand mandala.

Each summer, Education
in Action offers the Lone Star Leadership Academy program to
outstanding Texas 5th-8th graders. Participants travel to Dallas/Fort
Worth, Austin or Houston/Galveston to develop leadership skills and
experience what they are learning in school through visits to
significant Texas sites.
Upon acceptance into Lone Star Leadership Academy, participants'
Texas Representatives and Senators are notified. In addition, each
participant receives a Welcome Packet including student program
guidelines and a press release to distribute to the local news media.
Participants then join a delegation of other distinguished students
representing schools from across the state of Texas and travel to
Austin, where they develop leadership skills while learning about the
great state of Texas. Participants have the opportunity to meet with
state legislators, learn about future career and internship
opportunities, visit historically, politically and geographically
significant sites and be part of a rare academic experience. Upon
completion of the program, each participant receives the Lone Star
Leader Certificate of Merit to be added to his or her academic
achievements.

Show Description - Wicked: SO MUCH HAPPENED BEFORE DOROTHY DROPPED
IN. Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two
girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin -
is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful,
ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the
Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most
completely satisfying new musical in a long time (USA Today). On
Broadway and around the world, WICKED has worked its magic on
critics and audiences alike. Winner of 20 major awards, including a
Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is Broadway s biggest
blockbuster (The New York Times).
ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first
Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's
and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.
INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It
is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length
of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to
accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School
program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE
requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having
fun at the same time.
The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway)
on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or
all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete
at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early
afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please
call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.
