Not sure if you should homeschool? Have you just started and think
you might be making a mistake? Come listen to Carol Pavliska at SA-HERO's
Dinner With program this month.
Carol can help you decide what aspects of parenting/educating are
really important then decide if homeschooling is supportive of those
goals. She will present data on how homeschoolers do in "testing", but
will also present the much more interesting data on how they do in
society after they are out in the real world of work/family/college.
There is something called the Happiness Quotient - research that was
done with homeschool graduates where they rank their contentment,
satisfaction with life, social and civic activities and
philosophies.....and the results are amazingly positive.
Seating is very limited. RSVP to hmschoolsa@gmail.com. The event is
free. Tuesday, November 27th at 7 P.M. at La Madeleine on Broadway.
San Antonio HERO is pleased to announce that Carol Pavliska will
return as a "Dinner with..." speaker with Gotta Love 'Em, how to deal
with those oh so helpful family and friends that don't understand
homeschooling.
"Gotta Love 'Em!" Oh, those helpful in-laws and loving neighbors!
Do you wish you could have all the answers when their inquiring minds
(and mouths) want to know about homeschooling? You know homeschooling
works for your family, but do you sometimes find yourself at a loss
for words when drilled about socialization, tests, college, etc?
Inspirational author, Carol Pavliska, will lead this discussion to
help you deal with outside influences on your family with facts,
figures and humore. Carol has been published in several magazines and
inspirational book series, including Chicken Soup for the Soul and
pens a family humor column. She is the mom of five unschooled, and
often unruly (but not un-socialized!) children.
Tuesday, November 27th at 7 P.M. at La Madeleine 4820 Broadway, San
Antonio 78209. Across from HEB Central Market on Broadway about 4
blocks north of Hildebrand.
Seating is very limited. RSVP to hmschoolsa@gmail.com. The event is
free. Dinner and drinks are not included. Come join us for a fun and
enlightening event!

SA-HERO will be holding a National
History Day Competition in January of 2008. You must register
by Dec 1 to participate in the event. We will be having an
information session on October
30th at 1:00 pm at the Thousand Oaks Library. We will schedule
additional information sessions if requested. However, you do not have to
attend the session to participate in the event.
Please take some time to explore the
National History Day website (NHD.org). This terrific site
describes the National History Day program, and is filled with
detailed information to help your student produce a high quality
History Day project.
SA-HERO is putting together a National
History Day orientation program, field trips to various university
libraries, and other “how-to” events.
National History Day is a year long
program for middle and high school students. The fall months are
spent doing research. In early January, students spend time
creating websites, documentaries, 1 act skits, museum displays, and
writing research papers. SA-HERO will schedule our event,
probably sometime during the last week of January or the first week of
February-depending on the availability of space and judges.
The regional event will be held
February 29 (preliminaries) and March 1st for finals.
SA-HERO will be sending 1st and 2nd place
winners from each category to the regional competition. 1st
and 2nd place winners in each contest will be awarded the
opportunity to compete at the state competition in
Austin on May 3-4. The National competition will be
held at the
University of
Maryland at
College Park June 15-19.
If you would like to receive more
information on our National History Day program please contact us at historyFair@sahero.org.
Southside Lions Recreation Center of San Antonio is interested in
hosting recreational sports leagues for area homeschoolers. The
current sport is Volleyball and we can form teams as small as three to
a team. The leagues are for ages 6 to adult. The facilities are
available Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. There is
a possibility of "open" volleyball as well. The center has other
programs it can make available to homeschoolers including a nutrition
program.
In order to form the leagues, we have to know by the first week in
November how many are interested in participating and their ages. The
cost will be $5 per child, $10 per adult for the entire season. The
Southside Lions center is near the Southside Lions Park on Pecan
Valley between I-37 and I-10.
This is a great opportunity for homeschoolers to develop a low
cost, daytime athletic program. The center hosts other sports such as
basketball during the year. We need as many homeschoolers as possible
to participate to demonstrate our commitment to the program. We also
could use some help organizing the effort. If you are interested in
participating, please contact us at mKretzschmar@sahero.org as soon as
possible.
SA-HERO will be hosting the National Word Power Challenge for area
homeschoolers. The contest is open to fourth to eighth graders. Visit
http://www.rd.com/nwpc/index.jhtml for more information about the
contest. If you are interested in competing, please let us know. We
need to have an estimate of the number of people competing so that we
can find an appropriate place to host it. Send an email to WordPower@sahero.org
if you are interested.
If there is enough interest, SA-HERO will arrange for local college
campus visits. Scheduling campus visits as a group allows us to
arrange to sit in on classes and have admission and financial aid
information oriented to homeschoolers. The goal of the visits is for
students (8th grade and up) to start familiarizing themselves with the
college application process and deciding what factors are important to
them in selecting a college. The visits will probably be on Mondays or
Tuesdays. The first visit will be to Our Lady of the Lake University.
Other visits will include UTSA, Trinity, Incarnate Word, and St.
Mary's. Please send an email to mKretzschmar@sahero.org if you are
interested and be sure to note which days of the week work best for
you.
The goal of this group will to provide parents of teens the chance
to discuss the various challenges in preparing teens so that they will
be ready and able to begin adult lives whether this is going to
college or looking for a job. The meetings will be monthly in the
evening with guest speakers as needed. Send an email to mKretzschmar@sahero.org
if you are interested.
The deadline for Dual Credit Spring 2008 enrollment at San Antonio
College is December 7th. Sophomore, Junior and Senior Level students
may enroll in dual credit academic courses through San Antonio
College, earning both college and high school credit concurrently. If
you have any questions, conflicts, or problems do not hesitate to call
Mr. Fabian Cortez, or Ms. Alma Nino, Dual Credit Coordinators, San
Antonio College 733-2136.
We have more boys than girls for the Social Graces Dance and
Etiquette classes! These classes are on Wednesdays from noon til 12:50
and continue weekly till November 7th. The concentration is on two
great dances: Eastern Swing and Western Two Step. The location is the
"The Blue Bubble Ballroom", just north of Loop 410 at 9315 N.Broadway.
STUDY ROOM AVAILABLE FOR NON-DANCERS DURING THE CLASS! Bring your
favorite game, or your schoolwork, etc.!
The price is still a low $15; that's $5 per class. Please email
Lindsey Zuniga at
lindseyzuniga@sbcglobal.net for your invoice.
She cannot take credit or debit cards, nor instant payments.
We have refined our polls for Houston and San Antonio. Please vote
so we can confirm that there is enough interest to make our required
minimum (20 tickets). Even if you already gave us prior feedback, we
need you to vote again in this new poll.
The Dallas 2008 season has been announced and has 17 shows, more
shows than ever. We need your feedback to determine which shows will
make our required minimum.
Only those shows that show enough interest to make our required
minimums will have homeschool offers. We will leave the polls open for
awhile but we need feedback asap for shows that are rapidly
approaching so we have enough time to set up the offers (example Rent
in Houston in Nov, Sweeney Todd in Dallas in January).
Feel free to participate in both polls if it's likely you would
attend shows in these cities.
Attention former houston.rr.com users: we have been unable to
contact some of our users who expressed interest in shows because
Comcast is no longer forwarding your emails and your addresses bounce
if we try to substitute comcast.net in your address. Please provide us
with your new email address if you would like to be contacted.

Saturday Morning Discovery is a free introductory art experience
offered for children on Saturday mornings during the school year.
This family-oriented program has been in place for nearly 40 years,
giving children ages 5-16 a chance to work with artist-teachers in a
wide variety of media -- ceramics, drawing and painting, pinhole
photography, silk-screening, stained glass, origami, and seasonal
activities. Parents or guardians are required to stay with the
children throughout the program and often work alongside them.
In 2006, the San Antonio Downtown Alliance honored Saturday Morning
Discovery with its Downtown’s BEST OF SAN ANTONIO Award in the
Cultural category – which just goes to show that you don’t have to be
the newest kid on the block to still be enriching lives and having
fun.
Each session is one-month long, and advance reservations are
required. To register for a one-month session, call Regina Sanders,
SMD Program Coordinator, at 210.224.1848 ext 321.
The class will be a martial arts/fitness class. Fitness and Fun
will be the main focus. The children will be learning how to kick,
punch, and play fun games. It will be good for exercise and give
parents an hour to get an errand or two done. Parents are welcome to
stay and observe in our parent's room. Age range is from 7-12 but if
child is less than 7 yrs old it depends on the child's ability to keep
up with the rest of the class. Children younger than the age of 7 tend
to have a shorter attention span. I'm willing to try with younger than
7years old. Children older than 12 years old would probably get bored,
but the same as the little ones, I can work with them also. I'll try
to make it where no one gets left out. Younger than four is pushing
it.
