The deadline for Dual Credit Spring 2008 enrollment at San Antonio
College is December 7th. Sophomore, Junior and Senior Level students
may enroll in dual credit academic courses through San Antonio
College, earning both college and high school credit concurrently. If
you have any questions, conflicts, or problems do not hesitate to call

The Texas Children's Choir has started gearing up for the year. Dr
Hardaway, the director, is looking for at least four more singers.
He'd prefer boys, but he'll audition anyone (I think as young as six).
He's looking for dedicated, enthusiastic children who are also strong
singers. He prefers them 12 or under, but he has several in the choir
who are older.
About the choir: Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-7pm at
Olympia Elementary school, next to the Forum. There is also one
Saturday am practice a month. Several performances are scheduled in
different venues. The choir is service-oriented, meaning they are not
a "show choir", but rather perform when requested as a service (e.g.
they do a performance for Veteran's Day). Dr Hardaway expects all
singers to make all practices and performances. Occasionally missing a
practice for a special reason is ok if you coordinate it with him in
advance. But this is a very serious commitment. He works the kids
hard. The choir may sing in many different venues, so if you are not
comfortable with your child singing in a particular church, for
example, this is not the choir for you.
My daughter is in the choir. I've been very impressed with Dr
Hardaway and the choir. He has very high expectations of the children,
but they all love him and enjoy working hard for him.

The FEAST Varsity Baseball Staff invites you to our annual Fall
Training Camp, September 11 - October 18. All home schooled boys ages
14-18 are encouraged to join us for 6 weeks of baseball instruction,
training drills, contests...and just plain fun! The camp will be held
on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. The tentative location
for the camp is Bain Field located at the southeast corner of
McCullough Ave. and Basse Rd.
The cost is $65 per player, and camp and is limited to the first 20
participants. Because space is limited, early registration is
encouraged. Payment is required with registration. If interested, fill
out the following registration form and pay in person at the FEAST
office.
Although attendance is not mandatory for participation on the
varsity baseball team next spring, those who participate will

The SAHERO band begins on September 13th! Tuition is $100 per
semester and we'll be having classes at MACSA. The classes w will be
from 10-1130 am. Beginners are welcome.

Depending on meeting the minimum enrollment criteria, the classes
will begin on Wednesday, September 5. There is an annual GCAC
membership of $25 and tuition is $40 per month. The class will meet on
Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 - 7 p.m. or 7 - 8 p.m. depending on
experience and training. The classes will be held at the Guadalupe
Cultural Arts Center School and Galeria located at 723 S. Brazos. All
interested in the flamenco guitar classes will be asked to arrive at 6
p.m. on September 5. From that first meeting, the class will then be
divided. Students must provide their own instruments.

On the second and fourth Wednesdays in September and October, the
staff at the museum and the farm will present Childhood in Early
Texas, an interactive, hands-on program for the entire family.
Discover what life was like for a child in the mid-19th century during
a visit to this historic site. In the museum, learn about childhood
chores, clothes, and schools, and then make some old-fashioned toys to
take home. Take a break with a picnic lunch in the pecan grove along
the Brazos River, then hike up to Barrington Farm to experience life
on the farm. End your visit with a stroll through the cotton field,
picking a boll or two along the way.

On October 13, 2006 Artpace San Antonio is launching its fourth
annual Chalk It Up. This one-day street scene is designed to showcase
the creative talent of our city in a free public event. I am pleased
to invite you and your group to participate as one of our official
TeamWorks Artists. You and the other TeamWorks Artists will each play
a significant role in the event by creating an original design in
chalk, rendered directly on the sidewalk of downtown Houston Street.
As a group participant your sidewalk canvas will be approximately 6’ x
12’ and situated along Houston Street.
Chalk It Up will be a high profile, welcoming event. We have
secured historic Houston Street, from Presa to Soledad, as the site
for this pedestrian friendly occasion. The event’s creative elements
include:
* Houston Street Chalk Art: Ten Showcase Artists present monumental
original images, and over 25 more San Antonio based Feature Artists
take to the streets to showcase their talent.
* Public Mural: A place for aspiring artists to participate in the
creation of a super-sized street mural. This public work, directed by
a San Antonio teaching artist, needs the public’s creative touch to
complete.
* Freestyle Area: This area, open to visitors of all ages, is a
space for friends and families to try their hand at chalk design and
show off their unique artistic style.
* Kidzone: A space just for kids, youth are invited to visit
creation stations designed to let their creative spirits soar.
Artpace serves as an advocate for contemporary art and as a
catalyst for the creation of significant art projects. As TeamWorks
Artist, you will play a central role in helping us to achieve our goal
of educating the public about contemporary art. We hope Chalk It Up
will present your group with an opportunity to explore a new medium, a
new format (the sidewalks of Houston Street), and to examine your
ideas for public art. In turn, your chalk art and dialogue with the
audience in San Antonio will introduce creative ideas and perspectives
to our broader community.
TeamWorks Artists are integral to the success of the event and we
are pleased to invite you to participate. Our past TeamWorks Artists
have been a diverse group including educators, students, cultural
organizations, and community programs. For the 2007 year, we aim to
increase the variety of groups and organizations to best represent San
Antonio’s creative community. I hope you’ll accept this invitation to

I just wanted to let everyone know that my Girl Scout troop is now
accepting new girls. We are a multi-level, ALL INCLUSIVE troop. We
have all religions and all ages (Daisies age 5 - Seniors age 14). We
have a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, Aug 21) from 2-4pm. Our next meeting
will be Aug. 28. We meet off of I-10 and UTSA Blvd. We have about 8
Cadettes/Seniors, 6 Juniors, 5 Brownies and 4 Daisies. We have only
homeschooled girls. I do require at least one parent to be registered
with Girl Scouts and available to help occasionally.
Here are some of the things we have scheduled this year:
Sept - Nut Sales (a very small sale in order to raise quick funds
for the troop)
Oct - A leader/co-leader and girls only troop campout
Dec - Holiday Party and tons of fun stuff!
Jan/Feb - Cookie Sales!!!
Of course, we have tons of badges to earn, community service
projects and awards ceremonies. Our Daisies will be learning about the
Girl Scout Law. Our Brownies will be taking charge and learning lots
of stuff. Our Juniors are preparing to be leaders and will be teaching
their favorite badges this year. Our Cadettes/Seniors have tons of
neat ideas and projects planned.

Grades 4-5-6 - Juniors
Grades 6-7-8 - Cadettes
Grades 9-12 - Seniors
(This year 6th graders get to choose their level. Next year, 6th

Parents can learn strategies for giving consequences they can live
with while providing a balanced environment of love and structure in
the "Becoming a Love and Logic Parent" series. Free introductory
meeting Sept. 6 at the Jewish Community Center. The six-week session
meets Tuesdays, Sept. 18 to Oct. 23, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For information

HERO is proud to present the first of a series of chess classes
with Selby Anderson, President of the San Antonio Chess Club, a U.S.
Chess Federation National Master and Life Master, and a regular
teacher with USA Chess camps. As a special introduction to the
homeschooling community, Mr. Anderson is offering weekly 90 minute
classes entitled "Chess for Novices and Intermediate Players" for ages
7-17, at the Maverick Library. Material covered will include rules,
elementary checkmates, strategy of the pawn chain, and endgames. The
cost is $6 a lesson ($24 for the month). Classes start Monday,
September 10th , at 1:00 p.m., and will conclude on October 1st.
For those unfamiliar with chess, Mr. Anderson will conduct a 90
minute seminar on the chess pieces and movements. This is open to
those six and above and is $6. Completion of this seminar will enable
those beginners, age seven and older, to attend the weekly classes.
Adults who would like to assist the weekly class by serving as
referees, may attend the seminar without charge. Moves such as
castling and en passant will be covered.
This beginner's seminar starts at 1pm on September 6th at Maverick
Library. The seminar coincides with "Chess in the Northwest" (CIN).
CIN is a homeschool gathering for those children who wish to play
chess. This group meets the first and third Thursdays of every month,
and offers an additional opportunity to practice strategy and
discipline.
It is anticipated that some students will wish to participate in
tournaments at some point. Mr. Anderson will provide guidance on the
various matches within our local area, as well as across Texas.

Mr. Anderson is also available for private lessons at a rate of $30
per half hour.
SA-HERO will present a homeschool information session on
"Everything you wanted to know about homeschooling but didn't know who
to ask" at 7:00 pm at the McCreless Library on Monday, September
10th.Maverick Library. We will go over how to get
started, review local resources, and answer any questions. All
participants will receive a homeschool information bag from the HERO

SA-HERO will present an Odyssey of the Mind Information session on
September 21st, 2:00 pm, at the Cody Library. Odyssey of the Mind is a
creative problem solving competition for children in grades three and

Home school P.E. classes are now available at Kids Get Fit! Sign up
for the following time slots: Mondays and Wednesdays from
10:00-10:50am or 11:00-11:50am
Cost is $50.00 a month for the first child and $10.00 a month for
each additional brother or sister. (A minimum of 4 families is
required to make a class.) If you prefer one class a week we will be
offering a Friday class from 10:00-10:50 and 11:00-11:50 for $25 a
month for the first child and $10.00 a month for each additional
brother or sister. *Classes are designed for children ages 6-15.
Open gym for home-scholars runs from 12:00p.m-3:30p.m. Registration
is $50.00 per family and $50.00 per month for one child and $100.00 a
month for the entire family (children between the ages of 6-15). Check

As a personal testimonial, my girls participated at Flip City last
year and had such a great time. It was a nice fit for our family. We
met some really neat homeschool families, and really appreciated how
the owner of the gym worked with us to create a "homeschool only"

The San Antonio School for the Performing Arts is forming classes
for ballet, tap and jazz for homeschoolers! The classes will be in the

Jean Burk, former homeschool mom, has come up with a fantastic
class to teach your kids how to take the SAT and score very high on
it, even if they are of average intelligence, by looking for patterns
in the questions, and knowing what to look for and how to take the
test. Her two children both got free rides to pricey private schools,
and one of them was a National Merit Scholar. She developed this out
of desperation, needing to find a way for her kids to go to school
without the parents financing it.
IF YOU ARE AT ALL INTERESTED IN THIS, Jean is from DFW, but will
travel to San Antonio for a workshop (hopefully at our church) if we
have 15 students at $99 each. The workshop includes a workbook and I
think another book, but not sure. The workshop has been scheduled for
Friday, August 24, 4:00-9:30 & Sat Augst 25th, 10:00-3:30. Held at

Join archaeologists from the UTSA Center for Archaeological
Research and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park at the
18th century Spanish Mission site just outside San Antonio for
volunteer Saturdays!
Rancho de las Cabras is located in Wilson County within the San
Antonio Missions National Historical Park. It was built in the
mid-1700s (sources range from 1746-1760) to contain the livestock
belonging to the missions. Participants will excavate to improve
documentation of ranch life, which will assist the National Park
Service's effort to interpret the site for visitors.
When: Saturday, August 4 Saturday, August 25 Saturday, September 1
Saturday, October 13
Time: 8:30-2:00 each day
Open to ages 10 to adult. Children 16 and under must be accompanied
by an adult. There must be at least one adult per every three
children.
There will also be a Ranger led tour of the site for those who do
not want to dig but would like to see how it is done. The tour will
last about an hour and a half.
Please bring your own lunch and snacks, we will provide water and
digging tools. This is a fairly remote site, with an unimproved road
that could cause problems for low-clearance vehicles. We will caravan
people out to the site as needed. Because the site is undeveloped, it
contains brushy areas and fire ants; it is recommended that boots and
appropriate clothing be worn, this includes a hat, long pants, and
gloves.
Located 30 miles south of San Antonio, meet at Floresville City
Park on SH 97 in Floresville, Texas at 8:30am to drive the short
distance to the site. From San Antonio, take I-37 south. Exit onto Hwy
181 south to Floresville. Turn right on Hwy 97 west to River Park.

August 25, 2007 - The Fall Children’s Garden Saturday mornings
9-10:30 am Learn to grow vegetables organically. For more information
call 207-3255 There is a $5 fee. Ages 8-13
Children ages 8 through 13 will be accepted for this program on a
first-come-first-served basis until all garden plots are filled. There
is a fall program and a spring program. Classes meet every Saturday
from 9 to 10:30 am. The program includes volunteers from the Men's
Garden Club, Bexar County Master Gardeners, Garden Volunteers of South
Texas, as well as other experienced adult gardeners to supervise and
work with the children.
This program includes planting, nurturing, and harvesting an
organic vegetable garden. Seeds, bedding plants, tools, compost and
other supplies will be provided, and the gardeners will be rewarded by
the fruits of their labor!
Due to the limited space in this program, we ask that all
participants be prepared to attend all sessions. Two absences warrant
being dropped from the program. To register, download the registration

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first
Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to
Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line
of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There
is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that
move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the
whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are
always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's
and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.
INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions
Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior
center, but young people are invited for international dancing on
Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle
dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among
others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from
dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great
opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that
provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because
there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults
$2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual
clothes.
The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It
is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length
of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to
accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School
program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE
requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having
fun at the same time.
The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway)
on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or
all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete
at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early
afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please

mentors high school students in building the Dream Classic
aircraft. The program is free to high school students. The
mentors meet the students at San Geronimo Airpark every 3rd
Saturday of the month from 8:30 a.m - noon. The students learn to
fabricate rivets, use a rivet gun, drill, follow skematics, and so
