On-Going Activities

Folk Dancing

ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING Happens once a month, the first Saturday of the month, 7:30 pm at Incarnate Word Univ next to Central Market. The dances are partner dances done in a long line of couples, as seen in the latest Pride and Prejudice movie. There is no footwork or steps to learn, the couples dance figures that move them up and down the line. It is a great activity for the whole family. Suggested donation for adults is $2.00, and kids are always free. From Broadway, enter the driveway across from Denny's and follow the signs back to the Garden Room.

INTERNATIONAL DANCING Takes place every Friday at Lions Field Rec Center, 2809 Broadway (at Mulberry) Yes it is a senior center, but young people are invited for international dancing on Fridays, 7:30 pm. These dances are easy and mostly line or circle dances from countries like Romania, Greece, Israel, and France, among others. The dances and music are traditional, we learned them from dance teachers from the respective countries. So it's a great opportunity to learn about other cultures, choose an activity that provides some exercise, and suitable for the whole family, because there's no smoking or alcohol here! Kids come free, and for adults $2.00 suggested donation. Wear comfortable, sensible shoes, and casual clothes.

Homeschool Swim Team

The Home School group is open to all ages and grade levels. It is recommended that children be able to swim at least one length of a 25 yard pool to enroll. Instruction is designed to accommodate a variety of swim abilities. The Wave Home School program is geared toward helping Home Schoolers fulfill their PE requirement, while becoming water safe, better swimmers and having fun at the same time.

The group trains at the Alamo Heights High School (6900 Broadway) on Monday, Wed. and Friday at 1:15 pm. Your children can attend any or all of those 3 days that work best. Home School swimmers may compete at the weekend meets, if desired. By participating in an early afternoon practice, the evening hours belong to your family. Please call Coach Susan, for try-out information: 210-488-1923.

Summer Camps

ACE Academy

The ACE program helps students develop an awareness of the role of aviation in human history, encourages exploration of career opportunities in aviation, introduces the role of government as it relates to aviation and develops an understanding of the overall socio- economic benefits of aviation in our communities and daily lives.

San Antonio is one of the many cities nationwide that offers the ACE program. Sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Organization of Black Airline Pilots (OBAP), ACE nationwide offers this unique opportunity to all youth ages 14 to 18. Unlike other cities, San Antonio has the added benefit of sponsorship by the San Antonio chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (TAI). TAI provides an invaluable link from aviation's past to the present.

OBAP and TAI are non-profit organizations. They provide tuition for ACE along with funds donated by individuals and local corporate support. Participation in ACE is by submitted application. All interested students are encouraged to apply. ACE is a day camp that is one week in duration. Attendance for the entire week is required. Self- discipline and the ability to work with others are essential. Lunch and healthy snacks are provided along with transportation on various field trips conducted during the week. Anyone with even the slightest interest in aviation is highly encouraged to apply.

Both OBAP and TAI are dedicated to promoting career opportunities in aviation. As a result, they conduct many initiatives that encourage all youth to consider the aerospace field as a career. ACE is one such program.

The FAA is tasked with the mission of providing a safe regulated aerospace system. As a regulatory agency, the FAA oversees the safety and efficiency of aviation in this country. Another important part of the FAA's mission is to promote aviation career exploration with emphasis on opportunities for women and minorities. To accomplish this, the FAA partners with many organizations to help sponsor the ACE program. Although not limited to women and minorities, ACE is sensitive to the need to increase exposure and opportunity in these underrepresented groups.

Summer Art Camp

Summer Art Camp offers one- and two-week long classes concentrating on a specific media or subject and providing creative learning experiences in a positive, nurturing and fun environment.

Because Summer Art Camp offers individualized instruction, enrollment is limited to 10 students per class unless otherwise noted. All classes are taught by a professional artist who will help inspire and develop individual expression.

AGE RANGE Summer Art Camp classes are open to ages 5 – teens. Classes are designed to fit the skill set for a specific age range. Age ranges are based on this and not on the artistic ability of the child. No exceptions are made.

Because we’re committed to a high-quality educational experience for all the young artists at Summer Art Camp, our youngest artists — 5- and 6-year-olds —may enroll for half-day only. Teen classes are geared to ages 13 – 16, however older students may register.

LOCATION Classes offered, unless otherwise noted, are held on the park-like grounds of the Southwest School of Art & Craft (SSAC), Ursuline Campus (across from the Central Library).

Visit Southwest School of Art And Craft website for more information.

Seguin Outdoor Learning Center Camps

Students are already dreaming about the end of school and making plans for the summer, and we have summer camp programs sure to bring big smiles. Our camp programs feature fun activities that teach outdoor skills, foster an appreciation for nature, forge friendships, and encourage self-discovery.

TEEN EXPEDITION CAMP Join us on a 4-day expedition to the trails, cliffs, and caves of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. This trip will be full of adventure activities: Professionally guided rock climbing instruction, back packing, primitive camping, geocaching, and more. We will also take time to explore the natural wonders and beauty of the park. We plan to practice outdoor photography, gaze at the stars, and even enjoy a night hike at full moon as some of our adventures.

STEPPING STONES CAMP Step into a week of discovery and fun at SOLC. This half-day format is perfect for the young explorers who enjoy the outdoors. We'll participate in exciting activities that encourage creativity and learning: science & nature exploration, group games, teambuilding activities, fishing, hiking, arts & crafts and more. Stepping Stones Camp was our most popular camp last year, so for 2007 we've added an additional week. We'd like you to join us this year. Sign up early!

ADVENTURE CAMPS These programs are especially for older youth seeking adventure and camaraderie. The full-day format gives us more time to spend doing advanced activities including: archery, canoeing, high ropes challenges, and even a team survivor challenge. We will also offer other fun activities such as: fishing, hiking, and group games. In addition to having lots of fun, you will grow stronger as a person and build essential teamwork skills.

REGISTER EARLY FOR CAMP

Our summer programs are led by experienced, professional staff and qualified instructors who are trained to provide a safe, fun, and rewarding experience. Space is limited in each session, so sign up early. Visit website for more information.
